1950s-style sundress sewing pattern from Lila + June
Soak up some rays at a picnic in the park or twirl across the dance floor in the Picnic Dress! With a gathered shelf bust, feather-light spaghetti straps, and a full gathered skirt, the Picnic Dress uses strategically placed volume to create an hourglass shape. She's designed for larger busts, and the fully-lined bodice uses clever shaping to provide a bit of support for the girls. Make her up in a dreamy solid or an eye-catching print - the Picnic Dress just might be the perfect summer sundress!

The Picnic Dress is designed for non-stretch wovens. When choosing a fabric, you want something that gathers easily but still has a bit of structure to it. It is lovely in shantung, dupioni, lightweight chambray, linen, poplin, broadcloth, and quilting-weight cottons. Denim, canvas, and other heavy fabrics will be difficult to gather at the bust. If you’re using a VERY lightweight fabric like a lawn or a voile, make the lining out of something a bit sturdier, like a quilting cotton or a heavier-weight muslin, and consider lining your straps as well.
